Blog: San Diego

The American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery recently had its annual meeting in San Diego. It happens at the same time as the American Society of Ophthalmic Administrators, so Josh and I went together. 10,000 ophthalmologists and ophthalmic administrators in one city at the same time is a nerd fest that is hard to fathom. City buses drive by with 10-foot-tall bottles of eye drops on their side, eye surgeon celebrities walk the sidewalks like rock stars, restaurants are crowded with people name badges and suede elbow patches on their jackets. It is fantastic.

Josh and I had a great time. We went to a lot of meetings, got some thoughts for the future of Hunter Vision, and ate at the same restaurant three times. Neither one of us are big “travelers.” My wife Lizzy loves to travel. When she is in a new place, she wants to visit every unique hotspot that makes that city famous. It is unfathomable to her that Josh and I go to meetings and then go sit back in our hotel room for the night and talk about the day.

She thought I was exaggerating about how little sightseeing we do until she came with us on our trip to San Francisco last year. The farthest Josh and I ventured from the convention center was to go get pizza, which we then brought back to our hotel room and ate while we watched the Country Music Awards. Earlier that same day, she had gone to some place called the Fisherman’s Wharf, visited the Full House house, and ridden on approximately 50 different trolley buses. I thought we were all having a wonderful time that evening until months later when Lizzy was still bringing up that we made her watch the CMAs while we were in San Francisco.

Lizzy had to stay in Orlando with Luke this year, and Josh and I went to a bunch of meetings on the other side of the country. And while I can’t tell you anything about San Diego other than the weather is nice, we had a very good time. Next year the meeting is in Chicago, and Lizzy is going, and I am pretty worried that she is going to make me go to a museum. She’ll say it is because I should get some local culture, but I know it will be in retaliation to watching the Country Music Awards.
