Blog: America Wins One

It is less than 24 hours after finding out that the most wanted criminal in the world was shot dead by a Navy SEAL. The next day, a few things are clear. One, if a couple helicopters full of Navy SEALs land in your front yard, it is unwise to shoot at them. Two, it is wonderful to see America united about something again. At a time when there are deep divisions over every conceivable policy, domestic and foreign (which could describe almost every time in America since 1776), it is a huge lift to put one in the win column.

There is so much to disagree about in politics, but there is so much more to agree about as Americans. We agree we want to be safe, free to pursue our dreams, and that we want the world to be a better place for our kids. Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness turns out to be pretty all-inclusive. And it makes sense, considering Thomas Jefferson had to craft a document that would unite a bunch of congressmen who disagreed about every possible bit of minutiae. It’s a situation that seems pretty familiar today.

It is good to see that we still carry on our oldest traditions in America: disagree about every small thing, and then join together and realize we agree on the important things when big moments happen. So today, with people united for a time, it is good to be an American no matter what our politics may look like. God bless America, and God keep us safe.
